So tonight I went to a concert. It was Revolve and Jason Ackerman.
Jason Ackerman, has some cool and some funny songs but isnt the best vocalist. Revolve on the other hand, well Micah and Kristin for this show, just them are amazing. Kristin has great vocals and Micah sure can rock on the guitar, they have talent. Anyway after listening to them I always wonder, How do they manage to write such good songs? I mean I can hardly write a piano piece, let alont vocals for it. So I was wondering. Then Jason played and he had one song I really liked. He also talked about how he went to a song writing class, and how they said never lose an inspiration. So how do I do that. What if I have a great inspiration and I don’t know how to actually do it? You know? I don’t know how to write other than by improv and then writing down what I like. So is there and easier way? If so I would like to know? Thanks!

hey spencer! thanks for the mad props! can i just say you are one of the coolest kids i know. your blogs are great…and really well written. i feel lucky that my boogies have someone like you to look up to. but, i wanted to answer your question about writing lyrics?… a lot of times i get a phrase that keeps rolling around in my head whether it be for the meaning, or for the sound of the words together, so i will base my lyrics around that. i will also be sitting somewhere (in church, or driving…don’t tell)and get inspired with thoughts or phrases that i have to write down. don’t throw stuff away if it sounds stupid later…the words can always be changed around, but keep the thought. other times (this week) i was thinking about an actual story. so, i write about the story, but use more universal terms so that everyone can relate to a piece of it…here’s the example (we’re singing it Sunday)
verse 1:
you can come down now
from those heights you’ve climbed to
i am here, on this ground
you don’t have to strain to see
just look down
come down to me
chorus
come down into my arms
let me tell you all the ways
i know you in and out
and love you anyway
let me put my arms around you
come on down, come down to me
so, it’s actually a song about Zaccheus, but in broad enough terms, that it could also be allegorical. with a main theme as a chorus.
so, i have lots of different ways to write lyrics but at this point i’m totally blabbing. sorry.i hope this helps. i’ll give you your blog space back.
